KCA is a professional association serving people working in research commercialisation, technology transfer, universities, government, industry and related innovation ecosystems across Australia and New Zealand. To continue creating value for its community, KCA sought a deeper understanding of members' perspectives, expectations and opportunities, as well as an informed view of how comparable organisations operate internationally. The challenge was to gather diverse input, make sense of a complex mix of qualitative and quantitative evidence, and turn it into a clear, practical foundation for Board-level discussion.
Forestlyn provided end-to-end research, facilitation and strategic advisory support. We designed and delivered a Membership Discovery research program; surveyed, interviewed and facilitated focus groups with 100+ KCA members and stakeholders; and created a process that enabled participants to share experiences, needs and ideas openly. We researched comparable Australian and global professional and knowledge-commercialisation organisations for context and comparison, analysed qualitative and quantitative input to identify key themes and strategic insights, produced a 47-page Membership Discovery Report for the KCA Board, and presented key insights, recommendations and practical next steps for Board consideration.
Forestlyn delivered a structured evidence base to support KCA's future planning. The final report brought together member perspectives, market context and global comparisons in one accessible document — helping the Board understand the themes emerging from the research and consider practical options for membership, engagement and organisational direction. The work gave KCA a clear research-led foundation for future discussion while maintaining the confidentiality of individual participants and internal Board deliberations.
Outcomes
KCA is at its best when it connects a community of people who do a job similar to mine, bringing us together, then communicating with universities, government and industry.
